    Hmmm, he served in the Wehrmacht during World War II and was wounded on the Eastern Front. I'd love to know more about that.

    He was conscripted according to the NYT - http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/22/bu...t-94.html?_r=0 . Maybe there's more to it (I honestly don't know), but the Wehrmacht was the regular army, unlike the SS for instance, and a lot of ordinary Germans were called up.
