It's getting weird when active ministers from your teenage years start popping their clogs. Every PD though...

    It's a sign that you're getting old.

Shocking news, unconfirmed reports say it was a heart attack and he died in his sleep. I was in Limerick this weekend, and went to Thomond Park before I left to pay my respects. Tied a flag to the gates, and signed the book of condolences

Hopefully that is the case. Desperately sad stuff, it must have been surreal being over there for the match and that news filtering through.

The King of Siam (well, Thailand), Bhumibol Adulyadej, the longest-serving monarch in the world having been crowned in 1950.

Elizabeth II is now longest-serving monarch.

Left of field one this, but US short story writer Thom Jones, who created wondefully drawn characters living neon-lit lives, dependent on prescription meds and always nearly making it. Genuinely one of the true greats of the short story.

Apparently there is to a a minute's silence at Hillsborough this Saturday as a mark of respect as the owners are from Thailand. I wonder how that one will go down with the visiting QPR supporters. If the Owls's supporters know what side their bread is buttered on there shouldn't be a murmur from them.

Always find it fascinating in this country how you are imbued with affection for certain racehorses.

Can't believe it's 10 years since he last raced.

Bobby Vee, '60s pop singer. Recorded Rubber Ball, but, sadly won't come bouncing back to you from this.

Weirdly, that song was in my head this morning.

    Carlos Alberto

I only saw a programme the other day on either Sky or BT about his goal in the 1970 final.
