The Championship is a long hard season and Benitez recognised there would be times when players are injured or need to be rested. The most important thing from Murphy's point of view was to take his chance if and when it came and it's brilliant that he's done that.
have to agree with this - murphy is doing exactly the job he was brought in to do, which is score goals when the first choice strikers (gayle and mitrovic) are injured or not in form. i also think that benitez was originally thinking 4-4-2 but has found a 4-4-1-1 / 4-3-3 more effective with one central striker.

it's arguably also the case that murphy has now made himself 2nd choice striker which is quite good going. mitrovic is no mug, scored twice against austria and once v wales in our group for example, and gayle is the player of the championship so far.

murphy has had to bide his time to some extent and take his chance when it came, and fair play to him he is doing that so far.

Not even on the bench today.

Pretty safe to say he won't benefit from promotion.

Great resilience shown by Murphy to double Newcastle's lead away to Huddersfield.

    'He has earned his shot'

The Irish forward impressed off the bench on Tuesday night and was largely credited for changing the game in Newcastle’s 2-1 win at Brighton.

    Start him v Wales.

Newcastle are a better team with him on the pitch.

Big show of faith in Murphy as he is chosen to lead the line against Reading at Gayle's expense.

Subbed after 75 and Gayle, who has been carrying an injury, replaced him.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

Murphy presses his case for a start against Wales with another goal this afternoon.

    Newcastle trail 1-3 now.

They trailed 0-3 before his introduction off the bench.

Scored today but Newcastle went down 3-1 at Ipswich and are looking less assured of their automatic promotion spot. McGoldrick scored for Ipswich and Ciaran Clark still out injured.

Best Newcastle player against Ipswich according to this: http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport...tment-12907901

I am trawling through his Soccerbase profile ATM and I see that 9 of the Ipswich players who started against Cardiff on 09 March 2010 were either Irish, Northern Irish or eligible for Ireland. Surely that's some kind of record!

The lad who was eligible for ROI was David Norris. Forgotten man Shane O'Connor completed a rare 90 minutes in that outing also.

O'Connor plays for Waterford now. Probably only in the last year or so starting to show the promise he had then, but probably won't even be a top LOI Premier player at this point.

What's the consensus on Daryl's prospects of staying with Newcastle next season?

I think they are marginal, but, I personally think he could be a worthwhile plan b for them.

i expect he will be kept on. newcastle have some money to spend but not a vast amount. they are currently trying to bring in tammy abraham on loan but he will be there to compete with dwight gayle / cover him if injured. mitrovic and murphy offer something different.

i would say that he will be there until christmas and if not getting any game time at all could be loaned out to a championship club for the remainder of the season (and his contract, which expires in june 2018).

Rafa Benitez was in Dublin yesterday and spoke about his Irish contingent at Newcastle, as well as the prospect of trying to sign James McCarthy (or not) - http://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/s...le-455152.html

Edit - I see elsewhere that Newcastle and Crystal Palace are interested in West Ham's Adrian, which could have knock-on consequences for both Elliot & Randolph. - http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/footba...-move-10822943

Good to see him score regularly with upcoming qualifiers.
Though the Newcastle move was, no doubt, financially good for him I felt he was a bit short-changed as he rarely started but still managed to score when called upon. Then was let go as soon as they were promoted.
