Liam, think the saltire has always been the official flag for footy but the lion rampant is used by the fans a lot - still I believe. I've asked this question up a couple of times to Scots and never really got a satisfactory answer.
Just an interesting question about international football-no more than that; when did the Salitare take the place of the Rampent Lion as the main flag at Scottish matches?
I just persumed as the national flag they'd always used it but watching a show tonight and they were tlaking about Scotland in the 1983 world cup and the whole lot of 'em had Rampent Lions-not a Salitare in site! Just wondering if anyone knows when the change came about?

The saltire is the national flag of scotland and can be used by all scots. The yellow and red lion flag is the royal ensign and should only be flown at royal occasions such as when the queen stays in her scottish gaff - balmoral castle. The saltire has become more popular in recent years - partly due to the film Braveheart.. The SNP's membership rose by 28% after the film's release...
