    Hillsborough Disaster and the Media.

I'm currently doing a fairly important project for college on the Hillsborough Disaster and how the media blamed the traged on hooliganism, drunkenness etc on the part of the Liverpool fans. We all know now this was a a big cover up to hide police incompetence, and the media conveniently blaming the scousers, who were an easy target at the time for a number of reasons.

I am in the initial stages of my research at the moment, and I would appreciate any pointers anybody with knowledge of the subject can give me. If you know of any good books, websites or newspaper articles on the matter let me know. I have researched most of the obvious data but cant seem to get my hands on any good books on the matter.

    Nice one!

"Hillsborough-The Truth", by Phil Scraton will give you all you need on the subject if you haven't looked at it yet. It gives a comprehensive account of what was one of the greatest miscarriages of justice on British soil. You could also try writing to the Hillsborough shop behind Anfield who'd only be too willing to oblige with information I'd imagine.

Nice one Joe,ya I have to get a copy of The Truth, the libraries dont have it thoughm i've also read some brilliant articles Scraton has written on the issue, one in partcualar "Policing with Contempt: The Degrading of Truth and Denial of Justice in the Aftermath of the Hillsborough Disaster" is well worth reading.
Another article,"Surviving the Media: Hillsborough, Dunblane and the press" by Ann Demphrey is a fascinating account of how two disasters were treated so differently by the press.

    Sound.

I suggest you try and get your hands on "When You Walk" by Anne Williams (Her struggle for justice for her 15 year old son who she lost at Hillsborough). Really sad story but will really help you with your project. Available from the HJC shop across the road at the back of the Kop.

I would highly recommend even for background research, David Conn's new book, "in search of the soul of football" or something to that effect. It covers Hillsborough and different tangents that lead off from it and interviews those involved. It also refers to the stadium disaster in Bradford which might help you to put Hillsborough into context. Overall its a very interesting football book. You should also contact the English FA because you should be able to get copies of the actual reports they brought out.
Limerick 37, its so shiny and new we dare not take the cover off.

I'd advise you to read the Taylor report as well just so you know the background. And if you can watch McGovern's documentary ran years ago on ITV it's good. I was going to do my dissertation on how the Scum alienated Merseyside by their reporting of the disaster, but couldn't find an angle worthy enough of a dissertation and proveable enough. Email phil scraton as well. He's a lecturer at a Northern irish uni cos he had agreed to answer any questions I needed answering. he recommended No Last Rights by
himself, Ann Jemphrey and Paula Skidmore. He also sent me his latest piece which I will PM you with
