    Crumlin (FAI Cup)

Wexford should have had Crumlin dead and buried in this enjoyable FAI cup-tie in Ferrycarrig this evening but two missed penalties and a couple of other missed chances left them vulnerable to a sucker-punch by Crumlin. This duly arrived with five minutes to go as Crumlin scored with virtually their only chance of the second half and Crumlin were through. Wexford started with Danny, Craig, Owen, Ross, Sean, Danny, Mikey, Eoin, Dean Kelly,Dean George and with Aaron Dobbs up front. Both sides seemed strongest in attack and this showed right from the off. On three minutes, Aaron Dobbs had a good move down the right but shot over the Crumlin bar. A minute later, Crumlin should have scored when an excellent Dean Hurley move down the left for Crumlin led to a volleying position for Crumlin with only Danny Bolger to beat, but it was skied. On nine minutes, Wexford’s Dean George showed good feet to get a shot away with his left, but Quinn in the Crumlin was happy to parry it away. Crumlin then had a chance to lob Danny Bolger again but it was hit too low and Bolger had a routine save. On 13 minutes, Wexford’s Dean Kelly hit a free off the crossbar with Quinn in the Crumlin goal stranded. On 25 minutes, Crumlin went ahead when a free wide right hit the Wexford crossbar and Crumlin kept the ball alive for Vickery to knock it home for 1-0 to Crumlin. However, just after the half-hour mark, Wexford equalised when Owen McCormack got his head on a Wexford free to give Quinn no chance. A yellow card apiece then finished the half with the game all square at 1-1.

From about the hour mark, you felt that Crumlin were beginning to run out of steam as Wexford started to dominate. It began on 58 minutes when ref. Mullally awarded the home side a peno when a home player was taken down running along the end-line. However, Crumlin’s netminder Quinn got down to save Aaron Dobbs peno and then kept out the resulting volley when the ball fell to Dobbs again for an impressive double-save. With 75 minutes gone more good work by Dobbs down the right led to a good cross to a free Wexford player at the far post, but the shot was stubbed and Quinn was able to grab it when he should have been picking the ball out of the net. With ten to go, Wexford got a second peno when Dean George got the other side of the Crumlin centre-half who pulled him down. This time, Dean Kelly grabbed the ball but the peno was identical to the first but directed at the other side of Quinn who guessed right again and it was still 1-1. Then, with five minutes to go, Crumlin broke down the right and the cross fell to Jake Donnelly who had been causing trouble for Wexford in the air all night, and his header gave Danny Bolger no chance and it was 2-1 to Crumlin. However, from the re-start, Wexford's Sean Hurley made good progress down the left wing and his pinpoint cross found a Wexford attacker in space about ten yards out, but the effort hit the Crumlin crossbar and stayed out. A second yellow for Reilly of Crumlin was too late to have much influence on the game. 2-1 to Crumlin at full-time but Wexford will know that they should have progressed.
