    Athlone

For anyone interested, it's planned to have audio commentary on tonight's match at the usual link. Will there be more than 2.5 goals or only 2.5 attempts on target? Will 2.5 players be sent off or be more than 2.5 fans at the game? Looking forward to it already!

Open and entertaining game between two sides who looked happier with the ball at the other end of the pitch and a draw was probably a fair result in Ferrycarrig tonight. Manager Damian Locke started with Corey, Ricky, Ross, Craig, Sean, Liam, Conor, Crokey, Adam, Mark, Donno and with Danny Doyle up front. First half was end to end and had many chances for both sides. On two minutes, Danny Doyle had an effort on target which Labuts touched over but curiously the ref, Mullally, called an offside. Ricky Fox then had another shot which Labuts held in the Athlone goal before Corey Chambers in the Wexford goal grabbed a good catch from an Athlone corner and Barry for the Shannonsiders had an effort on target which Chambers saved. On eight minutes, Wexford’s standard threat, a long throw by Craig McCabe, arrived in the Athlone six yard box with Labuts nowhere to be seen, and Thomas Croke who’s not the tallest, headed home for 1-0 to the home side. However, Wexford conceded some poor goals as well and the equaliser came for Athlone on 13 minutes when the Wexford defence allowed a head-high cross reach the far post where Barry for Athlone had to stoop to head it into the net for 1-1. On the quarter hour, Athlone should probably have gone ahead when a good move resulted in a shot being drilled a yard over from just inside the Wexford penalty area. Labuts then showed that, despite his reputation, he’s a talented keeper, as he made some really good catches from more Wexford long throws and a couple of corners, and also touched a good effort by Wexford’s Adam Hanlon over the bar. Crokey then got a yellow for a tackle before, on 40 minutes, Corey Chambers came for a far-post ball into a lot of traffic and didn’t get there, and the ball dribbled into the net off Rafferty for Athlone for 2-1 to the away side. Just before the half-time whistle, Labuts pulled off a really impressive save to deny Mark Slater curling a free-kick into the top corner, and Liam Donnelly couldn’t control the rebound which came to him very quickly with the empty net in front of him. 2-1 to Athlone at half-time.

Second half was only a minute old when the Athlone defence didn’t deal well with a ball running along their eighteen yard line and Wexford’s Mark Slater picked it up and drilled a low shot past Labuts who had no chance for 2-2. Chances kept coming with Donno having a good chance from a header which he hit straight at Labuts and an Athlone forward meeting a cross on the half-volley to clip just over the bar. With 15 minutes to go, Eoin Porter came on for Wexford and was soon followed onto the pitch by Craig Wall and new signing, Aaron O’Connor who’s ex Waterford. Best chance in final few minutes fell to Athlone when a forward pulled a shot badly wide with only Chambers to beat in the Wexford goal. Athlone’s defence then blocked a couple of Wexford efforts on goal, before, in the final minute of injury time, Athlone had a free-kick and the ball was bundled into the Wexford net but was ruled out for offside. One Athlone player, possibly Inverizzi, seemed to sustain a very serious injury in this final play – so hopefully he’s ok. So 2-2 at full-time after a very lively game between two well-committed sides.

Best for Wexford were Thomas Croke, Mark Slater and Adam Hanlon with probably 230 at the match including a large contingent from our latest partnership club, Wexford Celtic.
