    WYW v Kilkenny

WYW will be pleased to have overcome another hurdle in their attempt to retain the league title as they accounted for a game Kilkenny side in Buckley Park this afternoon. WYW made a couple of changes from the XI which started against Shels and went with Tamara, Nicola, Jess, Lolly, Linda, Kylie, Becky, Edel, Emma and with Lauren helping Claire up front. WYW started well but didn't get on the scoresheet early until with 20 minutes gone they were awarded a penalty. A dodgy one it looked as well with the lino putting his flag up for a WYW offside then taking it down as a second WYW player approached the ball inside the KK area who was bundled over. The referee did consult but maintained his decision and Kylie Murphy sent Coffey in the Kilkenny goal the wrong way for 1-0. Five minutes later, a poor KK kick-out led to a second WYW goal as Claire O'Riordan set up Linda Douglas who finished well from outside the area to the top left-hand corner for 2-0. With just ten minutes to go in the half, Claire O'Riordan took advantage of a free header to put WYW 3-0 up and this remained the position at half-time.

Second-half wasn't great as WYW took their foot off the pedal. WYW subs who came on during this period were Rachel Hutchinson for Edel Kennedy, Shauna Wall for Emma Hansberry and Meghan Whitty for Claire O'Riordan. Indeed, KK managed to create some half chances during this second forty-five but their shooting portrayed a team who were just too anxious to get on the scoresheet with snatched efforts, etc. There is definite potential in this KK team and it's great to read from their programme that they're already planning for next year. 3-0 to WYW at full-time and, if I'm right, WYW now need four points from their last three games but, given the run of games they've already had, there's undoubtedly some work to do yet.
