I actually thought it was a little more, the shed side was particularly filled, although the stand was probably only 3/4 full.

I would have thought the reigning champions would have gotten more support than that in a game against a decent opponent.

I shall bite!! There was a great post here recently about the Irish tendencies to be bandwagoners or event junkies! It is not at all good that Dundalk FC's average gate is significantly down but this is a trend that is across the board and not just LoI, just ask the Munster RFU, Shamrock Rovers after their first season in Tallaght, the FAI and half full Aviva Stadium for internationals. I will say that the financial burden of traveling to European games, the sheer number of games, the number or matches mid-week could all help explain away attendances in Oriel domestically of recent but really that would only be papering over the fickle nature of the Irish sporting public.

My question was genuine so you haven't bitten any bait. I thought it would happen been 4000 at least.

There are a few posts commenting on whether EPL is on tv or not. It shouldn't be impacting on the LoI.

The GAA championships are a great example of bandwagon and fairweather supporters.

I remember a few years back Ireland were to play France in Paris in the 6 Nations on a Saturday night. Big match live on tv. Many thought it would affect any GAA national league games being held on that evening. A crowd of over 8000 packed into Tralee for Kerry v Armagh, myself included. The weather wasn't great either.

The loyal supporters didn't miss the Ireland game either. Shortly after throw-in in Tralee, a decision was made in Paris to postpone due to frost!

The Dundalk supporters should have been watching an exciting outfield player with an Ireland callup. Lame excuse by O'Neill. Do LoI supporters need to see players who are good enough go abroad all the time before they get a callup? It was a genuine opportunity to promote the league and boost attendances in the process.

One thing this season that will have affected a lot of clubs is that the fixture schedule has been very disrupted. Going to games is a habit and it has all been a bit stop start with long breaks between home games for various clubs and then a number of home matches in close succession. It may not be possible to have everyone playing at home roughly every two weeks but the league needs to seriously sort out fixture issues.

The official attendance was 2,560, but most Oriel regulars reckon it was closer to 3,000.

You have to bear in mind that fans have been queuing up for Europa League tickets for the game on Thursday, 4,000 already sold apparently. People going to Tallaght for the Europa game have to factor in the cost of transport and probably some food for kids as well. The Derry game was on RTE, quite a few non season ticket holders are going to watch this one from the comfort of the armchairs. People only have so much money.

There are 3k seats in OP, if everyone was asked to take a seat last night, I'd say all would just have got seated. There is definitely a discrepancy somewhere, not sure why, maybe its ST's or sponsors/guests, but it can't be that difficult to record every person entering the ground. Live on tv def took away a good few, but I still think the actual attendance was closer to 3k, but 2,561 was the figure announced so that has to be recorded.

Some people chose to spend their Sunday afternoon in Mounthawk Park. Being at the foot of the Southern LoI U17 table wasn't a deterrent.

Shur Limerick were in town, where else would people be?

1,620 in Sligo last night supposedly. Maybe around 150/200 Harps fans made the trip, which was pleasantly surprising.

1,002 at Eamonn Deacy Park last night. There was a surprisingly sparse Cork City crowd, even if the game was on telly and they're playing Dundalk away on Tuesday. 50 max I'd say.

Our own season is drifting into nothingness and I can't see much more than 600-700 at our last home game against Longford Town at this rate.

And we took a big crowd to Inchicore last week. It was always going to be a small crowd given the distance.

True in fairness. Phenomenal support in Inchicore. I've seen bigger crowds from Cork City when they were mid table with nothing to play for. I guess people are picking and choosing their games.

Yeah, and you'd be right to point out that it's a Saturday, but the distances are big and the games are coming thick and fast. There's also the cup final to think about and people will indeed pick and choose.
