    Ireland v Germany & Poland

Squad announcement due today. With a 37 man squad being announced, if there was ever going to be a League of Ireland player included, it'd be for a large squad like this. I don't see it happening however.

Don't expect much in the way of shocks and probably much as you were.

Maybe a recall for Shane Duffy? We'll see.

What time is it to be announced?

3:30pm press conference. Assume it may be on RTE News Channel or online.

Squad will be refined on the 4th of October, according to John Fallon: http://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/s...er-354344.html

Only one Villa player expected to feature.

We're in big trouble if we've dipped since that particular night.

we were very much weakened due to injuries that night so which Ireland team has "dipped" since?

Ability-wise, there shouldn't be much difference. Whether or not O'Neill has moved us forward tactically to a significant degree is open to debate, I suppose, although I do think there is a bit more life, energy and dynamism to the team generally now. I certainly think it would be unfair to say we've actually gone backwards from that point. How do you reconcile the claim that we've gone backwards since that point with the 1-1 away draw in Germany? I think morale was severely depleted when we lost 6-1 and a lethargy/mental tiredness had consumed the team. There's no reason for apathy this time round considering we're right back in the running for qualification again.

In terms of the amount of players?

Even if you eventually get cut, I suppose it must be nice to know that your good performances have caught the eye of the management and you're knocking at the door, so to speak.

If you didn't make it at all, you can see who your target for a place is and whinge to the papers or sit tight and wait for the senior man to retire...

And it lets our players know that Martin knows they're Irish.

Christ. It's a boring fandom supporting Ireland at the moment.

It avoids having to go back to call up someone else (who then knows they were a second choice) after a withdrawal.

For the likes of Judge & Rooney who've been named a few times now and have yet to join a meet up, it must be very frustrating.
I suppose it's nice to get the recognition but realistically they know they haven't a much of a chance of joining the squad in Dublin for the games unless there is a injury crisis.

Other than Steven Ireland, I'd have thought any player who isn't in the EPL would relish the international recognition. Whether you ever make the squad or not it'd look good on the CV and maybe increase your transfer value a bit.
And if I was Rooney I'd be looking at some of those other strikers and realise they're 32/33 or even 35 years old and if I can keep up my form, I should be in squads in a year's time in a group where we've a decent chance of making the World Cup.

He didn't know Samir Carruthers, Stephen Gleeson or Joe Mason were Irish.
