There isn't an exclusive agreement with RTE. Setanta and TG4 can and have shown LOI matches. The agreement the FAI have with RTE is for coverage of International matches, part of this agreement compels RTE to have a LOI highlights show and also they must televise a certain number of LOI games a season however any commercial broadcaster can televise a match if they wish. All they need to do is send a request to the FAI/clubs
TG4 haven't shown LOI games in 4 years (or since the last TV deal)

Last TV deal negotiated in 2007

THE securing of a weekly highlights show for the Eircom League was a deal breaker in negotiations between the FAI and RTE which concluded with yesterday's announcement of an extended four-year contract between the national broadcaster and the football association.
In a deal worth €20m, RTE are now guaranteed live TV and radio coverage of all Ireland home competitive internationals up to and including the World Cup 2014 with rte.ie also permitted to webcast each of these games. RTE will also have deferred access to all home friendlies during this period.
FAI officials were thrilled with the outcome having lobbied strongly for increased coverage of the League of Ireland by using the bargaining chip of the international games.
RTE's live game output will gradually increase over the term of the contract and by 2013, the final year of the term, there will be 33 games broadcast which equates to one match per week of the regulation season.
Yet the news which enthused Eircom League followers was the announcement of a brand new weekly one-hour highlights programme.
This has long been a target of League officials who believe that a snappy highlights programme is far more beneficial than the exposure that comes from some of the live games.
While the new production's place in the schedule is not yet confirmed, it's understood that a sometime between 7-9.0 on Monday has been earmarked.
Understandably, there was some disquiet in the headquarters of TV3 yesterday as the announcement came as a surprise to them.
Criticism
In recent years, they have provided the only highlights programme for the League in the form of Eircom League Weekly although there has been criticism of its late starting time in or around 11.30. The commercial broadcaster is believed to be unhappy that they were given no opportunity to bid for the TV rights on this occasion.
They still have a deal in place for a highlights package and it remains to be seen how the new circumstances of RTE's coverage will affect that.
Meanwhile, Setanta are still committed to showing 15 eircom League games next year and TG4 will broadcast 10 in addition to cup games.
TG4 last showed games in 2009.

TG4 cameras set for Terryland
Thursday, 23 July 2009 21:57
TG4 has confirmed that it will broadcast live coverage of 11 League of Ireland and FAI Ford Cup fixtures this season, beginning with the all-Premier Division cup clash between Dundalk and Bohemians at Oriel Park on August 14th. TG4’s cameras will be at Oriel Park for the fourth round FAI Ford Cup match as the Gypsies and the Lilywhites compete for a place in the quarter finals of this season’s competition.
The following Friday Sacar Beo will be at the Brandywell Stadium for live coverage of Derry City v St. Patrick’s Athletic, while on August 28th Shamrock Rovers’ visit to Terryland Park to face Galway United will be broadcast live on TG4. The station has also confirmed that it will be at the Tallaght Stadium on September 4th when Shamrock Rovers will host St. Patrick’s Athletic.
For years, fans have complained about the LOI not getting enough coverage and actually try to be proactive in providing it and promoting the league and are shot down and for what?? I just find it all a joke.
Hopefully the fans keep going though. There are some fantastic commentaries and promotion of games around the country by the fans!

And they wonder why the leagues such a state
It's a pity RTÉ don't put a few clips up on youtube. Promote themselves a bit. That crap quality rip from the rte player of Forrester's second goal on Friday got something like 60 or 70k views. The video on the player is crap to begin with anyway. Such a difference between that and say watching it on RTE 2 HD on saorview on a big telly. Seems like an awful waste.
Vinny O'Connor's highlights of GUFC games were brilliant, close to 10 minutes long. Shels highlights were very good the last time I saw them as well. They aren't a threat to RTE in the least and neither are SRFCTV. RTE probably just don't like being shown up.

The secret boarding school rugby buggery coterie that runs RTE has the eradication of domestic football high in its charter, this move sits somewhere in this agenda but I am forbidden to say why.
