At our game against Drogheda on Friday, one of the Drogs players was called offside. One Drogs lad roared at the ref (correectly) that he couldn't have been offside from a goal kick. Course, the punt upfield was actually a free-kick from about the same place a goal kick would have been taken. Had a bit of a chuckle at that. It's almost second nature now to assume the referee is a know-nothing twit, when in fairness, they do usually know more than anyone else in the ground.

Nothing surprises me anymore. However I was a little amused at the cup replay between GUFC & Salthill. Gufc left back clears the ball & smacks the assistant with it. The ball rebounds over the end line & the assistant awards a corner to Devon. After a lenghty debate the ref finally awards a throw to Devon with the assistant claiming "I was standing on the pitch when the ball hit me"

That's a good one, never heard of that happening before! Shouldn't a corner have been given if the ball didn't cross the touchline?

Well for starters he wasn't on the pitch when the ball hit him. I think that was all he could come up with to justify his call.
My reading of it would be that he is supposed to be standing off the pitch so therfore is not considered to be part of the pitch.
The ref, cornerflag & goalpost are part of the pitch so if the ball hits off them it's still in play or you carry on with throw/corner/goal kick what ever is appropiate. Could be wrong on that tho!

Nothing better then up in Salthill earlier in the year. One of our players cleared the ball which was goin out for a throw in but the salthill player caught it well before itwent out. Standing yards from the ref he said "Come on lads it was going to go out anyway"

Yeah, that's correct alright. I don't know if you can assume the linesman wasn't on the pitch because he shouldn't have been though. That's like assuming a dog wasn't on the pitch because he shouldn't, and we've all seen that in You Are The Ref.

I stand corrected. He may have been booked for leaving the pitch, but he clearly didn't.

And just to show we are not all referee bashers all of the time, well spotted the man in the middle in the Drogheda-UCD game, definite peno for Drogheda, defenders usually get away with tugs and pulls like that so well spotted ref

No he's not - it's Dave McKeon on that game:

A bit of common sense would have been nice, but strictly speaking, he was within his rights
There was a referee observer at the game. Nothing will come of that though, as it was Buttimer's fellow Cork man, Eddie Foley.
Yes it was Buttimer who challenged Anto Flood to a race for his wages. I thought the jersey thing was a joke as well
The same Mr Foley who cost us the play off final against the Drogs when incorrectly ruled a Dave Goldbey goal offside and then went on to cover himself in glory at the WC.

    God bless your memory Don.

Kelly was reffing the match with his peroxide Jedward hairstyle.

Was that the same Kelly who permitted Herrick to kick us off the park in the semi?

    Yep, good spot alright.

But never a second yellow offence.

It seems to be the norm nowadays that if a penalty is given, a yellow card is shown (unless a red is).
