Was getting a bit worried as that stayed 0-0 for ages. We've struggled a lot against Mervue for some reason, 5-2 on aggregate compared to 10-0 against Kildare and 6-1 so far against Longford.
We're not arrogant, we're just better.
Bloody good win for us - still a lot to do but it's in our hands
DB Cooper is alive !
Mervue's Eoin Martin is a bloody good keeper. He was busy tonight and he kept 10-man Mervue in the game. He reminds me of Barry Ryan (Galway get everything). UCD kept the ball and kept plugging away creating their own chances and only rarely relying on Mervue's mistakes. It still took us 85 minutes to get two-nil up, with the help of a penalty.
Ciaran Kilduff booked for simulation (hope that starts a virus at other clubs).
Good weekend for us. One weekend that is all.
" I'll go right up to here,
it can't possibly hurt.
All they will find is my
beer and my shirt."
First half, Mervue were very physical and we didn't really cope well with it. When their 11 was sent off - having already been booked and warned - it got a bit easier for us, both because we had the extra man and Mervue were less physical after that.
The officiating was bizarre at best. Mervue's lad was sent off for an elbow in the face, but when Davey Mac was pushed in the face a minute later, there wasn't even a free (penalty). Five seconds into the second half, Kilduff had a goal ruled out for offside despite being at least half a yard onside and two minutes later was booked for diving when (a) he didn't appeal for a penalty and (b) he had actually tried to play on after being well tackled. Towards the end, the ref sent a Mervue lad off for a second yellow only to be informed by the Mervue players (and confirmed by the fourth official) that he hadn't booked him in the first place, and so it was rescinded. Apparently what happened is that he booked Player A earlier on, but noted Player B instead, and so when he booked Player B late on, he sent him off. Adding to the fun, though, is the fact that we (well, Mr McMillan!) think Player A was booked a second time with about 20 minutes to go, but not sent off. Really really bizarre stuff.
Mervue's keeper kept the score down (we had 34 shots to 5) and I really hope he'd like a degree in something. Three or four world class saves. One from Harding in particular was unbelievable. Mervue's tactics were largely just to clear their lines - some goal kicks went straight to Barron with no Mervue player in our half - but they threatened from their occasional set pieces, and scored a bullet header from a corner with almost the last kick.
I'd like to think that's our get out of jail game for the rest of the season.
