did the FAI not say a few weeks ago that there were alternate options available should Setanta have to pull out of the Cup?

Gate receipts Dodge,
Every club will have budgeted for them.....
At most 2 gate recipts this season, possibly only 1. I'd imagine that Derry would be more effected than most here as the crowd at Pats v Glentoran or Crusaders wouldn't be that profitable with ssecurity costs so high. Even still though, every little helps.
Also talking to someone connected with a club earlier (not Pats btw) and some of their sponsorship packages had Setanta games linked in. Some sponsors looking to cut back etc so he feels 1/2 may simply not pay what was agreed. It’s a complication that clubs don't need

Aye Dodge,
The Setanta games would be amongst the highest gates of the season for us. Also we can charge higher for match sponsorship etc for the competition.
Don't think we would lose much money on gate receipts due to cost of travelling to away games. Setanta Cup group games rarely more the 1500 crowd & we need to rent ground & provide security.
That said no club can affords to lose any money in these tough times.
Setanta Ireland and Setanta International are to remain on the air while a buyer is sought for them according to Setanta Sports' administrators today. Their UK channels are gone. What this means for the Setanta Cup I don't know.
Upwards to the vanguard where the pressure is too high.
Paddy Power are now taking odds on who might replace Setanta as sponsors of the competition... in incredibly bad taste if you ask me seeing as hundreds of people are losing their jobs as a result of Setanta's demise.

It's hard to see a way forward for the competition. The only way I think it could be salvaged is if the FAI and IFA were to join forces and try to work it in with the TV packages for the international games with Sky or someone. But it would almost certainly require a sponsor independent of the TV channel as no station is going to offer the kind of deal Setanta did, given the poor return they got despite substantial investment.
It might have to be subsidised by both associations to get it up and running again, in the way the FAI effectively subsidise MNS. It would require some really serious hard work and cooperation between the two over the coming months as it would be very difficult to get a major sponsor as well as a TV station on board in time for its scheduled start in September. Whether they have the appetite for that remains to be seen, but most clubs would accept the reality of reduced prize money at this stage.
But I think that both the FAI and IFA would rather an All-Ireland Cup competition in some shape or form as it appears they are keen on killing talk of an All-Ireland League 'by kindness'.
In terms of the structure of the competition and how it could be made viable, there are simply too many teams in the competition. There were to be nine teams in it this season. If it is to be kept on, from next year, there should only be six. Outside of Glentoran, Linfield, Cliftonville and perhaps Portadown, the teams up north that have been competing in it simply are not good enough, are not big enough draws and add little or nothing to the competition. It should only have the best sides from either of the border, not every also-ran who finishes third or wins a tinpot League Cup. That would inevitably mean us (Bohs) missing out in the future, but so be it.
A leading authority on League of Ireland football since 2003. You're probably wrong.
Statement issued on behalf of the Setanta Sports Cup Organising Committee
June 25th, 2009
The Setanta Sports Cup Organising Committee today (June 25) met with participating clubs to discuss issues surrounding its sponsorship of the competition. The broadcaster has written to the organising committee outlining their intention to secure the future of their Irish operation. They also underlined that they are positively disposed to the Setanta Sports Cup. Setanta Sports has made a commitment to remain in close contact with the organising committee while they endeavour to secure their Irish operation.
The Setanta Sports Cup Organising Committee, the FAI and the IFA will continue working closely with Setanta Sports during this process. Clubs were understanding of the situation and will be kept informed of developments.

Sounds reasonablyish positive.
Did the clubs get the prize money they were due this week? I presume not...
Be amazed if gate receipts for any club justified keeping this competition going, lowest crowds i've ever seen for a senior competitive fixture at shamrock park
Think Derry are the exception to rule on gate receipts - huge crowds for games via Blues & Glens and large travelling support certainly added to Linfield & Glentoran's coffers. Novelty factor of these ties certainly helped and the desire to see Derry defeat Irish League opposition definitely a factor.
I think the stop / start format of the competition doesnt help - I wonder if a straight knockoutplaed at fortnightly intervals (maybe 1st round 2 legged) would help - easier to keep interest and less likely to have meaningless games.
