    Wexford Youths v Mervue United

Youths and Mervue meet for the first time

Wexford Youths FC take on Mervue United A.F.C for the first time in their history at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night. Mervue may have had their critics at the start of the season as most people thought that they would struggle to adapt to the physical demands of Division 1 football. However, they have proved all the doubters wrong so far with some impressive results, no more so than their 1-1 draw at home to Sporting Fingal last weekend.

Mick Wallace won't be able to call upon the services of inspirational defender David Breen on Friday night as he has been carrying a knock for the last two games. This will be a major blow to the Youths as Breen as been a commanding presence at the back all season. Marty Kelly is also unavailable for selection. There is however positive news for Wallace with Gary Sheahan being welcomed back to the squad after a lengthy injury has kept him out for most of the season. Gareth Wallace is also back in the squad after he was being rested after a long season with the U17 squad.

“Mervue have had a great season to date. Their only a handful of points behind us in the League and we know this is going to be a tough encounter as they are very dangerous on the counter attack” said Wallace.

“Their (Mervue) much like ourselves when we started out a couple of seasons ago, except they have much more experience than we had. They have adapted to the League very quickly and they know how to get about teams. Just look at the result they got against Fingal last week, they never gave up and they got a late equalizer to their credit. UCD and Shelbourne had to score late winners against them, so their a good team and we're taking nothing for granted” Wallace said.

    Injured:
    Tim McGrath
    Kyle Dempsey
    Danny Furlong
    Paul Murphy
    Lee Aust
    Jimmy Keohane
    Marty Kelly
    David Breen
And Miles To Go Before We Sleep

    Finn Harps-v-Monaghan United

Saturday next sees us travel to Ballybofey for our Ulster Derby against Finn Harps. By their own standards the Donegal side have made a poor start to their season and indeed their performance somewhat mirrors our own and just lie below us in the table, although the have a game in hand against Shelbourne. In their last league outing against Limerick in Jackman Park Harps had a credible draw considering that they were missing a number of key players including their leading striker and keeper. Harps received a bit of a set back on Monday when manager Paul Hegary announced his resignation, he is being replaced on a temporary capacity by James Gallagher.

Monaghan always find Finn Park a tough ground to get a result in and Saturdays game should be no different. However United are playing well at the minute having collected 7 out of the last 9 points. Mick Cooke would be fairly confident of getting a result on the present form in Ballybofey.

With little counter attractions Monaghan are hoping for a good turn out of supporters to travel north for the 8.p.m. kick off.

Managers Quotes” Last weeks draw gave us our third unbeaten game in a row so hopefully we have turned the corner and can continue with this run. The eight goals accumulated from these games are also reassuring, and the seven points has moved us well up the table.

This Saturday we travel to play Finn Harps away. The Ballybofey grounds have always proved a difficult venue for us. Harps have had a similar start to the season as us; during the week they were unfortunate to loose their manager Paul Hegarty. I hope Paul will be able to return to football in the future because the game cannot afford to loose people of his calibre. For the moment James Gallagher takes over the managerial role and I wish him the best of luck and look forward to meeting him.

We will travel in a confident mood as I believe that if we can replicate our recent form we should at least gain a point but I believe we have a good chance of getting our first victory at these grounds for a number of years.

We will have a full squad to pick from with no injuries or suspensions.

I believe that we could have a good support with us as many of our supporters view this as a derby match."

What Cup?? We were hammered 4-1 by Sligo in the League Cup on the May Bank Holiday. The 0-0 draw last Sunday was in the 'A' League.

    United take on Bray

Galway United CEO Nick Leeson has appealed for fans to get behind the side as they bid for European football for the first time in almost two decades.
“We have made a good start to the campaign but we really need the people of Galway to come out and get behind the side if we are to progress,” said Leeson.

Galway United will try to do that on the field when they take on Bray Wanderers this Friday night at Terryland Park (7.45pm) when Ian Foster’s men will be looking for their fifth win of the campaign.

Top scorer Vinny Faherty and skipper Jay O’Shea will lead the Galway United challenge, but they will be without suspended Derek O’Brien and the injured Paul Sinnott, Shane Fitzgerald and Alan Murphy, all of whom are suffering from an ankle injuries, while Niall Walsh will undergo a fitness test on Friday.

    KO: 7.45PM

    Referee: N.Doyle

He's only trying to emphasise that the team are doing better than expected.. no harm in that.

And with the mess at Bohs and Cork they could make Europe!

Hmmm, the Harps fans don't see it like that! Nor do the bookies.

County without osbourne as they look to end 9 game losing streak

Colin Osbourne is set to miss out for the first time this season as Kildare County prepare to welcome Shelbourne to Station Road on Saturday night.

Osbourne is the only Kildare player who has played in every minute of every game this season but he is unavailable for selection tomorrow evening after collecting four yellow cards which means that he will be watching from the stands.

Baba Issaka returns to the squad which may see Paul Mooney move back to his preferred central position to replace Osbourne or Joey Somerville may elect to drop Colin Murray back from midfield.

Kildare County head coach Keith O’Halloran is looking for Kildare to get that illusive first win as possible, “It’s a massive game for us, they are all big games for us given the position that we in. We want to get that first win under our belts as soon as we can. We know how difficult this game will be, Shels are a side looking for promotion but we just have to concentrate on our own game.”

He continued, “We know what to expect from them, they are a typical Dermot Keely side. They are strong and solid and are very well organised but hopefully we can cause them some problems too.”

Kildare are on a miserable run of form having lost their last nine league games but there was enough in the performance while losing to Waterford to suggest that Kildare could be about to turn the corner soon.

The game marks the end of the first series of games and with Kildare having taken only one point so far, director of football Joey Somerville will be anxious to get some points on the board.

David McGill is suspended for the game and is unavailable for Shelbourne who will also be without Alan Keely and David McAllister who are both injured while David Cassidy is a major doubt. However, Kevin Doherty returns to the squad after missing out on last week’s draw against Longford Town.

Traditionally, Kildare have not done very well against Shelbourne and have only earned two points in eight league games against the Reds. A full run down of the league games against Shels is listed below.
