Poster campaign launch - Show Racism the Red Card poster campaign launched
League of Ireland clubs will distribute 60,000 anti-racism posters to schools nationwide, following the launch of the 2009 Show Racism the Red Card poster campaign. The Show Racism the Red Card poster campaign was officially launched today [April 21st], with some of the League of Ireland’s top players gathering in UCD to answer questions from schoolchildren around the issue of multiculturalism in sport.
League of Ireland stars Owen Heary, Joseph Ndo and Eamon Zayed, all of whom feature in the Show Racism the Red Card dvd, attended the launch of the poster campaign in UCD, along with children from eight schools. The Show Racism the Red Card posters, which are supported by Newstalk, display squad photographs with players holding Show Racism the Red Card signs. The 60,000 posters have been distributed among 12 League of Ireland clubs and will be brought to schools nationwide as part of the FAI’s Club Promotion Officer programme.

The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

In all my life i've never was at a LOI match of any sort where a racist comment was made. Now thats not to say its not there but come on, a bit wasteful.
Its not fully to do with league of ireland, its society in general. It was originally set up after the rise in racist attacks in 1997 apparently..according to that Sport Matters show on Setanta.

The Red Card spokesperson on Sports Matters didn't have much to say about racism in Irish football. He did, of course, reference racism in English football, in a manner similar to TV3's laughable copycat 'exposé' on 'hooliganism'.
It doesn't make sense to claim that Irish football is devoid of racism, but it most certainly is not endemic. I have never heard a racist chant or comment live at an Irish football ground. The only instance I can think of is abuse of Joey Ndo by Linfield supporters.
By associating so strongly with this campaign, the league and its clubs are sending out the message that it has a racism problem, which it hasn't.
Its been a while since i have heard any of this abuse at a City game. The Cup Final in 2005 there was a City fan shouting abuse at someone, cant remember who now though. He was nearly thrown off the middle tier in Landsdowne Road.
There was something at an away game recently but that guy was approached by other City fans and he was let known what the score was.
In short it does go on, not whole sale but too much of it for any one to have to put up with. Its a good campaign and draws attention to it.

There isn't an endemic racist problem in the league, and certainly nothing to compare with some leagues around Europe, but it is there, and I've witnessed it on plenty of occasions. It's not a football thing, but rather an extension of that casual, 'sure I'm only having a laugh' racism that we're so good at here.
It is sickening whenever it happens, but mostly though it's isolated comments shouted once or twice by no mark individuals, rather than an orchestrated barrage of constant abuse. That I've never seen here.
On one occasion, most idiotically of all, it was shouted by a fan of a team who had a black player on the pitch at the same time. No marks, as I said!

No it doesnt anywhere say that there is a problem with racism in the league. There have been a few isolated cases and mostly have been dealt with but the object of the project is to educate people and let them know it will not be accepted in the league. Nipping it in the bud is the term I believe.
Exactly, thankfully it is rare but it is something that the public need to know wont be tolerated. The campaign highlights the FAI's dedication to ensuring that all who wish to play or support football in this country are welcome.
i remember when we played pats years ago in the fai cup and one of the infreqenters in section o shouted racist abuse at charles mbazi livingstone he was politely told where to go..

To what lengths are you willing to follow the man though? I mean if he turns out to be a fan of Mussolini and is found to be making donations to Berlusconi's new party would you all follow? It may sound outrageous but you are set of fans who have been made to believe that supping wine while wearing pink tops is the done thing at football.
