    League of Ireland in song

Just got the new Jinx Lennon album, if anyone doesn't know him he's an utterly insane but brilliant musician/lyricist from Dundalk. On the record, "Trauma Themes Idiot Times" he has a song called "The Men Who Saved the Face of Football"

It kicks off with a sample of Maxie's infamous "It's a faaaarce", and the lyrics are as follows:

"Two lifetime supporters left the stadium known as Oriel Park,
    It was getting dark,
A little rough on the stands they went in to the supporters club for a drink,
what can you do when thugs shout mister magoo,
    mister magoo at you
And green and brown aluminium cans start flying ech side of you.

At 10 PM somone rang the supporter's bar,
they said louts had been onthe street interfering with all the parked cars,
Wehn they got outside through the windscreen there were siler glass stars and lonely rear wing mirrors lying lonely each side of the road.

    Can you feel it!

Bryan Adams song at half time oozing out over the loudspeakers feeling like a stallion one sunday every week,
    From Dominican Church Way,
    Past St Gerard's Hall,
    All points between,
the bastions, the titans of Summer League football.

    Chorus:
    Steve Heighway's toenails,
    Satzenbrau, Pub Crawl,
    6875, The Mujahaideen,
    The Linfield Riots,
Now you've got security gates to stop the kids drinking from behind your wall,
So you can tell yourself you're the man who saved the face of football

    Verse 2
It was like Gulag in the White Sea,
    Trotsky circa Italia 90,
In the electronics factory the lower tier management at the firm changed the workshifts round for when the home teams played,
Their eyes said be proud you, your country's plaaying today,
But I knew I'd be an outcast at seven
When my friends showed me bubblegum playing cards of Everton and Stoke City the players in the photographs looked like they had steptoe and son sideburns to me and I laughed with glee,
I didn't realise my friends were standing behind me,
And their eyes were getting very very glassy.

    Bryan Adams "Run to You"
    Coming out over the loudspeakers,
Trying to escape from the missus one Sunday every week.
Badger haired team captain owns sport shop now yeah,
He knew them all Jonny Onion, Feedback Freddy, M Bromley, Bruce Grobelaar.

    Chorus:
    Steve Heighway's toenails,
    Satzenbrau, Pub Crawl,
    6875, The Mujahaideen,
    The Linfield Riots,
Now your wife and children like zombies roam the shopping malls,
But inside you are the colossus, the id, the gaius.
    Caesar of football
We played a great game last night he said,
What do you mean we, those guys are making billions and they dont care about you and me.
And when the tournaments over, your pockets are empty, the furniture is still HP, but the bars and off license made plenty

Overall I think it's a brilliant ode to a game and league we must all be mad to love in the way we do.

Jinx's new album is great, four stars in the Irish Times (though not to everyone's cup of tea) the man talks a lot of sense about Irish life (check out his last album "Know Your Station, Gouger Nation") and here's an Irish Times interview with the man himself:

Got bottled off the stage in Dolans supporting Whipping Boy a couple of years ago for his constant references to "free state b@stards", general **** like behavious and finally the wheeling out of his girlfriend to try placate the crowd.

So despite being at said gig I still have no idea what the guy sounds like.

Sounds like the Limerick RIRA agus rula bula didn't get the rula bula. Jinx is all Beefheart and all right.

In fairness Heartworm would be one of my favourite albums of all time, but Whipping Boy are a disgrace live. Jinx just seems to love winding up a crowd more than anything, though he is completely insane.
I'll try and upload the song to youtube in a few days.
