    Richie Foran for Ireland?

I haven't seen Foran play in a long time. The Indo today is reporting that Harry Redknapp is interested in bringing him to Portsmouth. Is he good enough to make it in the English Premiership, and if so should he be considered for an international call up?

Foran plays for a team well-adrift at the bottom of the Nationwide League, three tiers below the Premiership. I'd say there are plenty in the queue well ahead of him even if he does move to Portsmouth. Even in Foran's own division, players like Lee Trundle at Swansea (the leading scorer IIRC) have been recently talking up their eligibility.

I think it's right that we use the time between now and the next set of qualifiers to consider all the options, but these options do need to be realistic ones. Trundle may, just may, fall into that category (I'm not sure of his age though), but I fear Foran never will.

I know Foran is currently playing for a ****e team, but I just find it interesting, if true, that Redknapp is after him. Redknapp is a pretty good judge of players. He obviously has seen something that I never noticed when I used to watch Foran. Has anybody seen him play recently?

I think he would do well for Portsmouth given time. Acording to the Indo, he is the fastest player over 30 yards in the 3 divisions outside the Premiership. As for Ireland, the more players we have playing at a higher level the better, so he should be considered along with any of the other names that have been mentioned in recent months.

That being the case, the other thing he'd definitely need to address is his temperament. Whilst I can't quote statistics, I do know that Foran has attracted more than his fair share of cautions and sendings-off whilst at Carlisle, and as such has earned a reputation among the other clubs in that division that precedes him. He'll have to sort it out if he's to progress any higher in the game.

I saw something on Lee Trundle on Sky Sports last week.

He looks overweight to me and is around 26/27. It showed some of his tricks and while there's no doubt he has good ball control, he'd never get the space to flick the ball over his head and juggle it in a Premiership game, let alone an international.

Personally, I wouldn't touch him unless he moved up to Div 1 at the very least. Otherwise, we'd risk becoming another Northern Ireland.
Maybe you should put her on a leash, agent-man.

Moving to Portsmouth would not guarantee Foran a first team place so presumably he'd be a squad or reserve player for a while.

Better to be playing 1st or even 2nd division english football than Premiership reserve.

Be surprised if Foran made the move as he hasn't exactly set the 3rd division alight although obviously he with a crap team.

Hopefully. Didn't Foran retire from international football after a nasty bust-up with the U21s a few years back?

I think Don Given retired Foran.

A small, but relevant distinction. Foran is a little trouble-making gob****e who gets sent off with the frequency of an Alan Smith or a Patrick Vieira. I'm not going to hold my breath for him anyway.

Ben Burgess is better than Foran or Trundle..he is also only 22 and Irish..he was at blackburn and everywhere he has been he has scored goals ..with the exception of stocport where he was injured..Benny B is a better prospect than either of them...Trundle is a bit of a donkey...deffo looks overweight

The original idea of this thread was that Foran might be going to Portsmouth in January. If he did and was playing well for them then of course he should be considered for Ireland. If he stays at Carlisle then we won't have to worry coz there will be no chance of him playing for Ireland.

If you can name anyone from the English Third Division who gets sent off with the frequency of Richie Foran, other than Richie Foran, go right ahead and make that comparison.

Anyone else think that maybe they made a mistake. Maybe Pompey are looking for Forlan?

Foran would be a risk..Forlan would be downright ridiculous and a desire to go down

Like Richie "You've only got ten men" Foran would be better than Diego "You've only got ten goals" Forlan.

Richie Foran admonished in court for retaliating after himself and Aaron Doran were followed, punched several times and hurled with sectarian abuse in Inverness town center.

The court obviously thinks he should just have accepted being punched and abused. I hope none of us gets this kind of reception in Scotland next week. Sounds like a lovely place really. Stokes, Doran and Foran should be more respectful of their hosts' culture.

Admonished in Scots Law means he still carries a conviction, just one with no sentence.
