Whelan has attracted interest from Aston Villa & Derby since Stoke's signing of Darren Fletcher. His current chief executive has been full of praise - http://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/glenn...ail/story.html

You just need to look at his record. His record over nine-and-a-half years at this club has just been incredible.

You could almost argue that Glenn goes down pound-for-pound as one of our best- ever signings, given the appearances he's made, and every summer we bring players in and Glenn maintains his position.

He's been a magnificent servant and I'm sure will remain so unless and until that situation changes.

If I remember rightly, it was an 11pm on transfer deadline day in January 2008.

We were ahead of the clock, but people tend to use the time available!

Very heavily linked with a £1m move to Derby on Twitter.

Linked with Burnley in today's S*n.
No quotes from the player, Burnley or Stoke management, or any agents. The justification is that Burnley have money to spend after selling Keane to Everton, and need a replacement for Barton.

Would be good to see him stay in premiership

A Burnley-Preston combined Irish 11 would be awful competitive if this came off. They'd only be a short a keeper!

Whelan signed for Aston Villa on a two-year deal today. Probably a good move for him - they will be pushing for promotion and he should start regularly. However, it's a pity to see one less Irish player in the Premier League.

Also a pity to see Villa over-stocked with centre midfielders: Bjarnason and Lansbury were signed in January and Jedinak and Gardner are there two. If they play 3 in midfield what are the chances two will be Whelan and Hourihane and the other will be from those 4? I know Jedinak has played a bit at centre half and Gardner isn't a world-beater but if they got with 2 in midfield then Hourihane's development could be stunted.

Over-stocked but a lot of doss. Bjarnason is playing wide more than central, and he's been a bit rubbish. Gardner hasn't played well either.

Could see Whelan and Jedinak playing together when Bruce wants to keep it tight, one or the other if he wants a more attacking shape. I would like Hourihane to play further forward and there's certainly an open spot for a creative, more attacking midfielder. It's probably a scrap with Lansbury on that front.

If he can't get ahead of at least two of those guys then he's better off elsewhere.

I think they are a smart bet, they weren't a million miles away last run from a play off spot and have experience in key positions with Whelan and Terry added by a manager with previous in that division. What are the odds tricky do you know ?

They were 18 points adrift - that's a long way off the play-offs

Its six wins in a forty-six game league, so not really. Its a dodgy month or six weeks from being in the mix, which is exactly what they had early in they year after bringing players in in January. I feel Villa in that league having added the two they have and are a bit more tidy in their work can comfortably be six to ten wins better, comfortably you hear ?

Now shouldn't you be working on some obscure formula whereby the sun finally shines on the UCD ass somehow ?

Sure they were nearer relegation the whole season, and ended up just 11 points off the drop. They were never I the play-off places all season, or even remotely challenging. They've been a basket case club for years now.

They may challenge next season, but it's daft to reckon they'll challenge based on adding two veterans to a crap squad.

Villa are the betting odds favourites for promotion and most probably that's not based upon them adding two older players to their squad.

I'm a Villa supporter for a long time and they being crap since the day MON left the club! ... and he was right to leave cause Lerner, the American owner was a fool! ... The at the bottom now looking up cause of the Chinese owner ****ing in tonnes of money but at last a proper manager to spend it! ... Think they get up this year but wont win it ...actually will get up through the play offs! ... Still need a top class striker!

So they may challenge, but have a crap squad, the addition of two veterans to which is irrelevant in terms of any challenge.

    Very good.

I'd be curious what you would put any challenge down to in those circumstances. Incantation ? The moon ? An algorithm ?
