    Waterford United 0-0 UCD

    WATERFORD UNITED 0-0 UCD
    Waterford have goalkeeper Packie Holden
to thank for a string of top-class
saves that earned the home side a
deserved point against UCD at the RSC.

In a game where neither side could take
advantage of the many scoring chances,
Waterford just about shaded it in terms
    of possession.

However, the Blues have now gone nine
league games without a win, six defeats
    and three draws.

Their last victory was against St.
    Patrick's Athletic on April 29th.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

From aertel. I'm disappointed. Our half reserve/half seniors beat them with Frost. Our seniors can't beat them without Frost and also without Reynolds. It was a perfect chance to capitalise on some results and establish our top half credentials. At least we lost no real ground on anyone. I hope we beat a poor Pats next week.

Ok not winning the game is disappointing
On the upside the first choice back four bounced back from a 5-1 pasting with a clean sheet. That has to be good

P.S. It is more likely that we will win the League Cup than ever win the Premier Division.

CTID call me mad but I harboured and still harbour big ambitions for us this year. I'd like to see us come 5th. I think we can overtake Longford and maybe even Drogs. Ordinarly you wouldn't be too bothered about taking a 0-0 from Waterford but they're on the rack at the moment. But yes, we did concede 5 less than last week.

Waterford United: Holden, Browne, Waters, Crowley, Breen, Mulcahy, Heffernan, Grant, Andrews, Bruton, Finn

UCD: Quigley, Mahon, O Donnell, Kenna, McNally, McDonell, Hurley, Dicker, Martin, Whitmarsh, McWalter

Lineups from BTID. Apparently Whitmarsh came off for Sammon after only 25 mins. He's still starting Hurley on the wing and Whitmarsh up front. I wonder if Paul got injured or was he so disappointing that Mahon hauled him off.

There are two ways to win games. ONe of them involves conceding fewer goals than the opposition. Clean sheets need to be practiced. If we are to finish ahead of Drogheda and Longford we need to beat them and we need to keep clean sheets against them to do that.

Very boring match. We created a few chances but none of them had any decent shots at the end of them. I notice that pineapple hasn't got a match report up yet, he obviously hasn't thought of anything in the match worth including yet.

Whitmarsh seemed to be injured when he came off BTW, he was sitting in the stand in front of where we were for the second half.

I'd like to know what other way there is win games!

Don't know where they got that from...

UCD and Waterford had to settle for a point which won't be of much use to either team after a poor game in front of a poorer crowd in the RSC on Saturday evening.

UCD made just the one change from Friday night's hammering, with Alan Mahon coming in at right-back; Aidan Lynch was the one to make way to the bench.

With Longford drawing and Bohs losing the previous night, UCD had a graet chance to make some ground on the top half of the table against a side who had lost their captain since losing to a virtual UCD second-string side in the League Cup the previous Monday. However, it wasn't to be in a game virtually devoid of entertainment.

The first chance of the game came about a quarter of an hour in - Waterford keeper Packie Holden's booming clearance was flicked goalwards by Crowley's outstretched boot, but Darren Quigley reacted well to make a comfortable save. A few minutes later, Seán Finn struck a free-kick from the edge of the area weakly wide, while UCD were limited to a couple of crosses - Paul Whitmarsh going closest when looping wide from Mick O'Donnell's cross. Whitmarsh wasn't to last much longer, however, coming off injured before the half hour to be replaced by Conor Sammon.

UCD came out much the stronger in the second half, having a better grip on possession, but finding chances hard to come by on what looked a fairly bobly pitch. Shortly after the hour, they had a great chance when Conor Sammon cut inside his man and struck a shot which Packie Holden could only parry; Gary Dicker followed up, but his rebound was blocked away to safety.

At the other end, a cross from the right found its way to the far post, where Darren Quigley pulled off a great save to deny Willie Doyle. About the only other piece of excitement centred around Seán Finn, who was booked, warned by the referee for dissent and subbed off in the space of two minutes.

UCD - Quigley; Mahon (Lynch 86), O Donnell, Kenna, McNally; McDonell, Hurley (Murphy 84'), Dicker, Martin; Whitmarsh (Sammon 25), McWalter

a combination of the Tall Ships, boghockey in Ennis on the Sunday, the 'attraction' of this tie and general apathy among the Waterford public.......

it aint looking too good for survival.

Jaysus we got better crowds when we finished third bottom in the First Division.

Thanks for confirming what I had been thinking myself.

Tall ships had gone.... The boghockey was on Saturday wasn't it?

If General apathy is that bad does the city deserve an EL club?
I know the genuine Blues fans do but there were only 330 of them out in force on Saturday

But didn't Chairman Gerry O'Brien steady the finances after the 400,000 Irish Punts raised from the flotaton as a PLC was squandered under Flanagan's management?

Yes his son was brutal although I think he was fixed up with another club recently

Doing it Ossie Ardiles or Glenn Hoddle coaching style and winning all your matches 6-5.. both teams would be defensively inept in that scenario

We have already lost 6 games so qualifying for Europe via The League is a non-runner for this season.

You're still conceding less, however many that might be!

I believe it's called hurling... They were playing in Clare in Sunday, apparently. All U-14s got in free with a paying adult.

Definitely. Sixth anyway should be (and in fact is) our target - no reason we can't overtake Longford, who are an average team really. The likes of this is definitely two points dropped. What's really annoying is that our record against the top teams is very good - a draw against Cork, two draws against Shels, a win and a defeat against Drogs, a win against Derry and a draw against Bohs. That's the sort of form that should prop up a European tilt. But we just can't do it against the lower teams... Losing to Bray, Longford, Pat's and Harps, drawing with Rovers and Waterford - too many points dropped...
