Just a quick word on jon macken here. am i the only person who is failing to see what Brian Kerr and Kevin Keegan see in him. He seems to work unbelievably hard for very little reward, can run about as fast as a broken down car and seems to have as much skill as david blunkett in the kitchen. Frankly he seems to be a journeyman who should be nowhere near the international scene!

He's done absolutley nothing in his career to justify being in our squad. Keane, Morrison and even Lee and Connolly have all done more to warrent inclusion. He is useless, his premiership record is absolutley appaling.Originally Posted by barglee
he cant run with the ball. he cant play intelligent passes, he aint a predator , in fact , he aint a goalscorer. was banging the goals in for preston in lower division, but then again richie foran bangs the goals in at lower levels, as does david connolly. none of them are capable. there is no need to talk about what other strikers we have. its a safe bet that he aint gona be in the next squad with s.reid fit now and mcgeady looking a player.
he's English. not irish even if he is class(which he aint)Originally Posted by barglee

Well he has certainly done more than Lee and has matched Morrison's "achievements".Originally Posted by Slash/ED

There's a 3 page thread on McGeady yet I didn't see you posting about him being Scottish.Originally Posted by Pablo
I wouldn't question McGeadys Irish status. He actively chose to play for Ireland while being wooed by Scotland. Macken seems to have had a sudden change of heart as his options dwindled as did Clinton Morrisson.
McGeady is no more Irish than Macken.Originally Posted by BobbySands
I had first begun playing for Ireland at schoolboy level. I had wanted to play for Scotland schoolboys when I was 15 but because Celtic didn't let you play for your school, it meant I was not eligible to play for Scotland schoolboys. I thought, 'Fair enough'. Then Packie Bonner phoned me up and asked if I was interested in going across to Ireland for training because he knew my grandparents on my dad's side were Irish. We had a practice match, I did quite well, and ever since then I have been involved in the Irish international set-up.
I played for the Under-15s, Under-16s, Under-17s, Under-19s and then the first team. The Irish do let players play for their schoolboy team even if they are not playing for a school in Ireland because a lot of their young players of schoolboy age have already moved over to England. I was always going to play for Ireland rather than Scotland at full international level, if chosen, because by the time I was capped I had already been part of the Irish set-up for around two years.
He also said he felt he has more of a chance of playing in a World Cup with Ireland.
I stand corrected. *hangs head in shame*.
Regardless of whether McGeady or Macken are Irish or not, I think it is important to remember that both players, in fact all players who play for Ireland are invited to do so. So if you have a problem with them playing for Ireland direct your criticisms towards the FAI and the management which selects them.

He certinaly has not matched Morrisons achievements or even bloody close. Morrison had more premiership goals in his first four games in the league than Mackens managed in his career. Morrison has also proven himself at international level, okay Mackens not had a chance but he's done absolutley nothing to warrent a chance. Lee at least is a big tall targetman, so he has something, I've honestly no idea what Macken is supposed to be good at as he's looked equally woeful at every aspect of his game when I've seen him and his goals record backs that up.Originally Posted by eirebhoy

Macken equalled Morrison's goal/game ratio in division 1 (Morrison was first capped when he was playing in division 1). Maybe his injuries have ruined his career though, I don't know.
Well it looks that way, if he was once a good player he isn't anymore.Originally Posted by eirebhoy
the only good ting about Macken is that Kerr almost never plays him even in friendlies.
It is better to be able to have him and not want him than to want him and not be able to have him...
