Shamrock Rovers have been invited over to Sunderland in two weeks time by the club’s biggest fan - Black Cats chief executive Niall Quinn. The lanky former Ireland striker is a fully fledged Member of Rovers - contributing €40-per-month like over 400 other diehard Hoops supporters. It might be small change compared to the amount of cash Quinn and his consortium have pumped into Sunderland since their summer takeover. But the fans’ money has seen Rovers return from the verge of extinction nearly two years ago to become a once-again vibrant club.
And ahead of the Hoops’ return to the eircom Premier Division, Quinn has offered yet more help to his adopted club. He has opened the door of Sunderland’s state-of-the art Academy to his old Arsenal team-mate Pat Scully and his squad for five days of intensive pre-season training. Rovers will arrive early on Wednesday February 21 and will face local side Durham City that night, while another game has been earmarked for the following Sunday.
And after a satisfying start to pre-season to date, Scully can’t wait to get stuck in over at the Stadium of Light. “I went over at the end of last season with Jonathan Roche (club chairman), Noel Byrne (secretary) and Mark Dempsey (coach) and we met Niall and Roy Keane,” he explained. “I know Niall from Arsenal and Roy from the Irish underage set-up and we had a good chat. “We had a look at the Academy and we are looking forward to training on the quality of pitches they have over there. It will be great for the lads.”
Keane chatted to the Rovers contingent about their First Division title winning season - and specifically about his old club Cobh Ramblers. Scully couldn’t deliver good news on that front however - the Hoops won once and drew three times with the Cork outfit last year. Meanwhile, Scully is currently running the rule over ex-Pat’s player Ryan Casey and Limerick striker Wayne Colbert in training. Rovers have lined up friendlies against Kildare County on Saturday, Dundalk next Tuesday and Waterford United the following Saturday.
Scully has already snapped up experienced defenders Barry Ferguson and Danny O’Connor, Limerick duo Tommy Barrett and Robbie Kelleher and goalkeeper Stephen O’Brien.

With regard to Pats and Rovers going over there, I wouldn't have a problem with it. If it's just to play warm up games, use the facilities for training etc,where's the harm ?

In fairness we're talking about a (supposed) business man here. I honestly don't think he'd do this deal unless he had only the best interests of his club (sunderland) at heart.
Galway United have chartered a plane from Galway to Sunderland for the game against Southend and there will also be a friendly in Terryland against Sunderland during the summer. Sunderland previously played a friendly in Terryland in 2000

Pats played them in the 90s, dont rememeber much of it tbh went drinking with the sunderland fans. Would ahve loved to go voer next week but too short notice

Thats what i was thinking the minute i heard it. Stupid move imo, as if Quinn gives a toss about eL clubs. If he did he would have invested in one.

God, the conspiracy theorists are out in force today. Maybe just jealous that their clubs didn't get the invite. It will be a very useful and highly motivating five days for the club. Not only can the players learn a lot - Scully can as well.
