Interesting that there's so many draws. I'd have thought that Shels beating Split would on the list.
Interesting bit in the dundalk programme re top 20 irish clusb perfs in europe, here is the top 10
Should provide some lively debate
1/ This was graciously given to rovers, 2-2 away to valencia in 1962, valencia won the inter city fairs (uefa) that season and were the top team in spain for nx few yrs
2/ Athone 0 milan 0 in 75
3/ Dlk 0 Celtic 0 in 79,
4/ Drogs 2-2 away to kiev
5/ Pats 0-0 away to celtic
6/ Shels 0-0 with depottivo,
7/ Dlk 1-1 with spurs (also won uefa cup that yr)
8/ Bohs 3 rangers 2 in 84
9/ Ucd 0-0 with everton 85 (who also won ecwc that yr)
10/ Dlk beating zurich 2-1 away in 1967 (ist irish team to win an away game)
#DundalkFC - First Irish club to win an away game in Europe (1963), first Irish club to win points in a group stage in Europe (2016).
Interesting that there's so many draws. I'd have thought that Shels beating Split would on the list.
We're not arrogant, we're just better.
Whats really interesting there is that only 2 of the top 10 were wins!
The best European performance I have seen (in the flesh so to speak!)was UCD v Everton at Tolka. it was 0-0 and it was great to see the Fabulous Everton team at the time being made to look ordinary!
What about Bohs beating Aberdeen away?
UCD came within a whisker of putting out a very good Everton side while Pats got a 0-0 draw but the game was over v Celtic. You need to have Shels beating Split in there and also Bohs beating Aberdeen and Bohs winning out in Germany v kaiserslauten.
shels v split 2-0 at home should really be up there well.
Shels beating Split was huge.
Bohs winning at Aberdeen and Kaiserlautern with the handicap of Roddy
Derry winning 5-1 against Gretna was incredible also and Derry's home and away results against Gothenborg.
Also, Pats results against Elfsborg were great results. There are just so many
Cork against NEC too

Maybe 'cos I.m a UCD supporter, but for me LoI clubs drawing 0-0 in Europe was the norm, and welcomed.
8) & 9) happened on a Tues. and Wednesday of the same week (special mention, Shamrock Rvs 0-0 in Belfast on the Wed.). But I think it's gracious to have UCD so high up the list aswell. Everton's record in Europe before that was brutal, like very bad. And they represented a League where clubs regularly got to Finals, semi-Finals was considered failure.
For me, measuring individual results is lesser than measuring a campaign. I think Dundalk going through three rounds (6 games, last 16) in the European Cup is excellent.
The debate should be where, is Shelbourne playing 8 games in Europe, two competitions, better or just a different measurement?
(Celtic/St.Pats was a 1st leg game and the pressure on defenders that brings. It should be compared with the Shels/Rangers (Tranmere Rvs) game the same day (3 up. 3-5 defeat). But I think its doesn't make much sense to measure that against Pat's 0-0 against Dinamo Bucharest in Tolka (1991?). Maybe compare and contrast though.)
Also alot of hidden performances. Derry City and Cork City have an exceptional home record in European competitions. Does Derry's goal in 1988 against Benefica count as a good result (1-2) but the first goal by a
LoI side in four years, coming from a long way behind.
"that season and were they [Valencia] top team in spain for nx few yrs" Real Madrid couldn't stop winning European Cups and a couple of times, they knocked Barcelona out in the early rounds of that competition. No question, Spain were the best League in Europe though.

what about Cork against Bayern Munich and Galatasary

As Irishmen we dilute our sense of nation by depending on the English to bring us our balls
Don't necessarily agree. There were some very impressive results back in the 70s and 80s which stand up to anything achieved today (maybe a draw then versus a win now, but against better teams when our clubs by and large weren't bankrupting themselves in the process). I wouldn't have number ten in there (probably replace it with Cork 1-1 Bayern Munchen), but the rest are all deserving of places in the top 20 anyway. There's 3 of the top ten from this decade; we don't know how many more are in the top 20. If it goes up to about half, I'd say that's fair enough. What's different now is that we're getting more wins but against lower teams, so the current results wouldn't necessarily feature up there.

Pat's moral victory over the Moldova Plumbers and Cluster Bomb Victims 0-5 home and away will be a memory I shall always cherish.
1966 European Cup Winners Cup, Second Round
First Leg : Shamrock Rovers 1 Bayern Munich 1 (Billy Dixon)
Second Leg : Bayern Munich 3 Shamrock Rovers 2 (Bobby Gilbert, Liam Tuohy)
1969 European Cup Winners Cup, First Round
First Leg : Shamrock Rovers 2 Schalke 1 (Eric Barber (2))
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.
Shels 0-0 with Depor is a good one, imo.
The season before Depor had made the semis where they lost to eventual winners Porto 1-0 on agg. They also beat Milan 5-4 in the quarter final when they were trailing 4-1 from the first leg.

I thought that the follow game (in Turners Cross) they had after that epic result was great because to players showed great courage playing with that huge sense of shame that they had brought on the league.
The sense of disbelief was palpable in the ground. I'll never forget it.
The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.
Bohs 3-0 BATE Borisov surely that has to be up there
Also i think we should be looking at performances over two legs too, not just single games.
Over two legs the best results that spring to mind are
Derry v Gothenbug
Corks run in the intertoto a few years back
Shels V Split
Bohs v Aberdeen
Bohs sticking 9 past rhyl
