Terenure 4ths squad strength was tested in the Sidney Bedlow cup on Saturday as they took to the field without 5 regular starting players, including their prolific front two who have around 40 goals between them so far. The changes to the team were evident early on as Terenure struggle to get any foothold in the game. VEC dominated possession and took full advantage of the favourable slope, wind and blinding Winter sun to race into a two goal lead. Terenure looked to be heading out of the cup at this stage, but managed to rally towards the end of the first half and Bernard Geraghty went close with a header from a Pat Sinnott cross. Terenure managed to force a number of corners before the end of the half and they were causing problems for the VEC defence, from one of these corners Mick Barton picked the ball up just outside the box and played Dave Stauton into the endline where he pulled back a perfect centre which was met by the boot of Brian Donlon to give the home side a big boost before half time.
Ian Mahony's half time team talk seemed to have the desired effect as Terenure started the second half much more brightly and levelled the game early on with Pat Sinnott beating his man near the corner flag before shooting into the top corner from a tight angle. The early goal seemed to affect VEC's confidence as they struggled against the conditions and it wasn't long before Terenure took the lead with Brian Donlon nodding home his second of the game from a corner. Wayne Domican's long throws were a constant menace after his introduction and, captain for the day, Donlon completed his hattrick as he got his head to one of them and beat the keeper. Things went from bad to worse for VEC when Terenure launched a counter attack from a VEC corner, it ended with a foul by the VEC keeper on the edge of the box leaving the ref with little option but to send the keeper off. Terenure then added a fith goal with a nice counter attacking move as Bernard Geraghty crossed for the inrushing substitute to score.
Terenure will travel to Glasnaoin 2nds in the 3rd round and will hope to progress to the quarter finals.
