  1. Will be the revolution be televised?

I attended the Soccerex European Forum in Manchester in April and hope to bring you a series of pieces on some of the takeways for the Irish game from the week.

Gianni Infantino, UEFA General Secretary, revealed at the conference that UEFA had agreed a deal with the European Broadcasting Union (“EBU”) for the televised rights for the Euro 2016 and World Cup 2018 qualifiers. Interesting, but what is the relevance for Irish football fans?

  2. No European Dance This Summer

When it came, it came quickly.

In the space of a couple of years, Irish club sides went from being perennial whipping boys in European competition to competing – and beating – the best that Sweden had to offer.

I’ve been based in Stockholm for over twelve years now, moving from a dark, damp Dalymount to the terraces of Stockholm’s Olympic Stadium and Råsunda in 1999. In the beginning the Swedes were miles ahead. The year I moved here AIK faced Arsenal, Barcelona and ...
  3. FIFA Targeted in Shock and Awe Attack

Reuters news agency are reporting that NATO have authorised a “shock and awe” attack on FIFA headquarters in Zurich. This amazing development comes in the midst of accusations of corruption and misappropriation of funds at the highest level of world football’s governing body. It is understood that the UN Security Council are keen to bring about regime change at the organisation which has been ruled with an iron fist by Swiss overlord Sepp Blatter since 1998.

FIFA has been at the centre ...

  4. Foot.ie Advert / Short Film Competition 2011

This is the inaugural Foot.ie Advert / Short Film Competition and below are the entries to it. The inception of it was a bit rough and ready, with the guidelines and rules being conceived within a very short time frame. It was a good bench mark though and it should give people a good idea of what to expect every November and even give them a whole season to gather footage and content for an entry into the 2012 Competition.

So, enjoy the clips and watch this space !!!

  5. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be

The common theme through the first week of the World Cup is that the media, and by extension the great unwashed, were waiting for the World Cup to "explode into life". I ask myself why?

The majority of football fans know that if you follow a team home and away in a season, there will be a number of games that will be completely forgettable. That goes without saying. The expectation of a raft of "classic games" is built on a generation who have grown up watching ...

  6. I'm sorry, I must correct you there

One of the features of the recent coverage of the LOI Select v Manchester United and Limerick v Barcelona fiasco has been that the print media have been vocal in articulating the questions which League of Ireland fans across the country have been asking.

It seems that once again the FAI doesn’t like their authority being questioned. Please find the link to a story from today’s Independent here.

Fair play to the print media for failing to just merely reproduce the bland, ...

  7. Athrú

Eugene McGivern takes his regular look at the world around him as Gaeilge

I rith an UEFA Europa sraithchomórtas do chonaic mé go raibh athrú nua eile á thriail sa cluiche sacar. Bhí béirt réiteoir cúnta breise ann chun seasamh in aice leis an líne chúil chun cabhrú leis an réiteoir. Bhí siad ar thaobh na láimhe clé is tú ag breathnú ón ciorcal láir ag an taobh thall den réiteoir cúnta atá ag an taobhlíne. Níl mé cinnte an mbeidh an modh nua seo mar buansheasamh sa cluiche ach déireann ...
