It's that time of year again. All eyes descend upon the grounds of Limerick University as the best footballers at U.13 level pit their wits against each other in the Kennedy Cup. An annual pilgrimage for many football enthusiasts and it promises to be a classic week as usual!!:D:D

ah yes, Sun great weather etc, where better to be but The Kennedy Cup Tournament. Hopefully DDSL do not win it again!!!!! great to see others win it and be lovely to see a league who have never won before do it, but as usual expect DDSL, Waterford, and Cork to be the big 3!!

What a start for the Clare team with a great 1-0 win over a much vaunted South Dublin side.Probably one of the best results ever.Great guts and determination shown by Micky Gilfoyles team and great support on the line.
Playing this morning South Tipp and would be optimistic.

From FAI.ie (http://www.fai.ie/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2119&Itemid=9):

DDSL make it a Four in a row of SFAI Umbro Kennedy Cup Titles

The DDSL held onto their National crown on Friday, emerging victorious at the SFAI Umbro Kennedy Cup tournament courtesy of a hard-earned win over Cork.

Ciaran Finnegan threatened to put a first goal of the tournament past the Dubs in the fourth minute but saw his snapshot saved by the legs of Dean Smith.

The DDSL grabbed the lead 24 minutes into the contest when Kevin Dempsey ghosted into the penalty area to meet Daniel Purdy’s cross-field pass and the right-winger showed poise to shoot low past Brian Cronin.

That lead was doubled three seconds after half-time through man of the match James Kavanagh with an opportunist shot directly from the restart.

Cork goalkeeper Cronin had to back-peddle to deal with the long-range effort but the ball skidded off the damp pitch and ended up in the net.

The DDSL defended resiliently for the remainder of the game and held on to capture a 23rd title for the largest league in the country.

The play-off to decide third place was between Donegal and Waterford. Donegal took the lead through an own goal but were pegged back with a Craig Keane equaliser. A penalty shoot-out followed where Donegal clinched third spot in sudden-death on a 4-3 score-line.

DDSL and Cork seem to have a monopoly on this competition!

I remember the year I was down there a certain A. Stokes ran the show for Dublin. He got sent off in one of the games but was back for the final, which Dublin won.

We came 18th...couldn't even beat Kerry! :(

There is just one monopoly at the moment and that is The DDSL, for the second year in a row thet failed to concede a goal. Waterford and Cork have both won it three times but DDSL are just so far ahead of everybody now it is becoming too predictable

DDSL looked head and shoulders over everyone else. Waterford were solid while Donegal were unlucky to lose to Cork. Mayo won Shield 2 and LDSL won the Bowl. The main honours list is pretty boring to read but the DDSL have such a big league and a great variety of players to pick from to win the Kennedy Cup. It's very rare that Cork doesn't reach the final.

Sun, great weather HAHA!!! Worst weather for years at Kennedy Cup. Just back from it and I would agree the standard was avaerage even DDSL were not outstanding by any means but were better than anyone else. I would love to see the competition get a revamp. How about putting the top 8 seeds into two groups and let them play each other for the cup, the first night is becoming ridiculous in its present format with the 1st seeds hammering the 4th seeds.
2002 was the best year for talent without a doubt, you had Stokes and Robert Brady with DDSL and Eddie Nolan with Waterford

The Limerick Desmond Schoolboys League won the Kennedy Plate on Friday when beating Kilkenny in a nerve wrecking 8-7 pen shoot out win after the sides finished 1-1 aet. This is a fantastic achievement considering we were seeded third in our group behind Dundalk and Kerry. The Desmond boys went through the group unbeaten and without the concession of a goal after their three games v Kerry (0-0), Dundalk (2-0) and Wicklow (3-0). In the Kennedy Cup Q/F we were up against kingpins DDSL and apart from the opening ten minutes we gave as good as we got before losing 2-0. Defeated West Cork
2-0 in the Plate S/F before getting the better of Kilkenny in the Plate final.
A brilliant tournament with Limerick Desmond now ranked number five in the country

Was that the 2002 Kennedy Cup?

Yeah that was 2002, spent most of it sitting on the feckin bench! Was a good week though. My little bro was down there with Wexford last year, they got on a bit better than us - won their group, lost 2-0 to DDSL in quarter-final + ended up coming 8th. Disappointing to seethe lads only get 19th place this year.

Is the Wexford team Wexford Youths or a representative team of the Wexford league?

ForzaWexford
19/06/2007, 1:02 AM
It's representative of the Wexford League.

Wexford Youths only have an adult team and an U21 team. Mick is also over the Wexford U18's, but it's a representative side like any other league, and not a club.

In fairness over the years they are the big 3. This particular Donegal are an ok team, every year one of the other leagues always has a good run, ie NDSL last year but no other years of simular success unfortunately.

Didnt Donegal win the U/12 inter league comp in 2006, therefore it wasnt surprising that they did so well in the Kennedy Cup

Donegal did win the cashen cup. But to confirm if they were a strong team they needed to at least get to the Kennedy cup final, otherwise they just got lucky at u12's. They also won the cashen cup because the DDSL got knocked out on penalties in the semis by Waterford. Im not saying they wouldnt have beaten the DDSL, but as they haven't actually faced them over the last two seasons they technically are what I have stated in my other comment.

fair enuf. in english:
donegal got lucky in the kenndy cup because of the group they got. carlow were nothing, athlone only played one decent game in the hole tournament- and lost that game to donegal, where they should've won it well- and then drogheda shouldnt be allowed back next year because of how bad they were. donegal had an easy group, if they didnt get out it would've been bad on their part.

happy now
